Carbon Calculation for the construction industry

Written by Jason Green

Carbon Calculation is becoming a hot topic in all areas of business. With the advent of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme by the British Government and the EUETS, reporting on carbon emissions is fast become a legal requirement within the UK, Europe and beyond.

The construction industry has been hard hit by the recession. With fewer construction projects taking place, winning new business is becoming more and more difficult and finding ways to stand out from the crowd is key to business growth. Construction companies are re-assessing all areas of their business to make themselves more appealing to work with, and the area of sustainability and the environment is quickly becoming a key area on the agenda.

Growth in this area has lead to a market need for Carbon Calculation tools for the construction industry. Carbon Calculated provide a huge database of carbon emission factors sourced from approved data providers all aggregated into a platform on top of which they build Carbon Calculation toolsets.

One of these tools is their Construction Carbon Calculator. This enables the calculation of the embodied emissions for all types of construction and civils projects.

The tool segments the project into 4 key areas:

  • Materials + Deliveries (bricks, windows, aggregates, flooring etc... and their associated delivery to the site via train, plane, ferry, HGV, etc...)
  • Waste Management (landfill, recycling etc...) with associated deliveries
  • Energy Consumption (electricity, generators on-site etc...)
  • Commuting (travel to and from the site via any mode of transport)

The system supports multiple projects, multiple users with varying levels of permissions. The enterprise solution offers a semi-automated approach to inputting data which makes it very easy to add 10 000+ entries at once.

All of the data can be outputted as a PDF for use in presentations and pitches, as well as ability to export the information into excel or other formats.

The basic system is completely free to use, and you can sign up here. Enterprise solutions are also available, and include branding the system to match a companies corporate identity. Contact Carbon Calculated for more information on 08454091403. Construction companies are using this tool to help add weight to their sustainability policies, but also on showcase projects to help win pitches and tenders.
