Philip K Dick novel Zap Gun made into Independence Day movie

Posted by: Geoff Davis In: Books - fiction|movies|SF

The Zap Gun by P K Dick – the plot involves slave ships arriving and landing on cities; the defense is to plant toys, in cities that are still to be attacked, which cause fatal (or extreme) hallucinations in the aliens, thus letting Earth off the hook. Easy eh? Funny how aliens are so dumb (see also: War of the Worlds).

The film is an example of the ‘alien urban planning’ genre; although why aliens would come so many light years to do such a daft thing is anyone’s guess. If so advanced, why need human slaves? It is never explained in any of these alien movies or books. The Matrix is in the same genre.

This plot is very similar to that of the US Hollywood blockbuster Independence Day – alien slavers, land on cities, foiled at last minute by uploaded virus.

It says ‘Man’s only hope is a mad cartoonist’ on the book cover. Replace ‘zap gun’ with ‘computer virus’ and you have the same plot.
