Ecobuild 2012 is sponsored by Schuco, who make solar power and heat (thermal) systems, glass, facades, etc.

Ecobuild claims to be the world’s biggest event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment – although that claim doesn’t sound very ‘eco’. Bigger? I though Small is Beautiful. Anyway…

Ecobuild show Excel London 2012 solar display

This show is focussing on “new eco thinking and challenging designs“. Although Eco is still outside the mainstream. New Building Regulations are very good for insul;ation – which is the main factor for an eco home. Other things tend to be a bit expensive, so stay in the luxury or niche market. Such as grey water recycling, sustainable materials (like hempcrete – hemp to make building blocks), straw, recycled materials, etc.

Ecobuild is at London’s ExCeL on Tuesday 20 – Thursday 22 March 2012. This is over in Canary Wharl to the east of LOndon, and is quite an interesting place, makes a change for Earl’s Court. Grand Designs is in ExCel, it is a very good venue for this sort of thing (vast consumer show).

So what’s on?

more than 1,500 exhibitors – more! bigger! sustainable construction systems and products

conference – with Sir John Beddington, Angela Brady, Greg Dyke, Monty Don, Stephen Bayley and others

over 130 free seminars – these are promos by companies so be prepared, select with care

many interactive displays which are fun – including Solar hub, Fabric first, Renewable heat and Natural, traditional and sustainable

Important
Before you go, make a list of what you want to do and see, or you will get swamped by the diversity and volume of things there.

If you are in an older property you will not be allowed by regulations to install the dreaded uPVC double glazing frames, which ire very ugly and low quality.

Window frames should be wooden to match the old style property. See these photo images below to get an idea of what needs to be done. This is not a DIY fix, this is all done by the skilled double glazing and framing experts. This is what differentiates the cheap salespeople that flog rubbish double glazing around the streets, and the experts who are usually in great demand and have a waiting list.

They will measure up the window gap, and fit the new double glazed window into the old frame, if it is in good condition. Sometimes a whole new frame will be needed. This includes the cable system that makes the window go up and down, which is called a sash system.

Double glazing will increase the energy efficiency of your home, prevent draughts, and also increase security. Good quality double glazing will also increase the value of your home – but low quality double glazing will reduce it!

Photos and Images of double glazing

Double glazing sash windows

Above: you can see how the framing is made and then glued to the glass. The double glazed unit is factory made as usual. The fancy framing to match the old style property is actually fake!

Double glazing sash window frame closeup

Above: close up of the curved wooden detailing on the glass – can see the back of the matching other side piece through the glass.

Double glazing sash windows

Above: general view of this fantastic looking old style window, with the latest high quality double glazing. Not brass window locks – security is a big issue these days and these windows come with high quality locks including bolt locks on the inside of the frames, and side limiters so you can open the window a small distance in hot weather.

Double glazing security locks close up

Above: nice looking brass locks give authentic traditional appearance and are very safe and practical too.

11.30 to 12.15am Finding and Funding Your Project
This covers financing for land, construction, materials, workers, insurance etc.

1 to 1.45pm Design, Planning & Sustainable Building

Just get it in budget. This is a hard one as things get added (let’s have a wine cellar!), or the spec improves (you are buying flooring and suddenly decide the better version is what you want) so always add a bit – perhaps 50%.

3.00 to 3:45pm Project Management

Don’t made horrible expensive mistakes. Hire an expert to run your job – you can still be hands-on.

4 to 4:45pm Walking Tours – Self Build & Renovation

More walk and talk with the experts.

Hanse Haus make modular eco-friendly houses that are simple to construct and cheap too. They are ideal for quick builds on cheap land, as normal housing development involves buying expensive land. This means the new build property has to maximize the potential of the site, and be custom built, to get the best price on the market.

Hans Hause prefab modular building

There are new Hans Hause going up in Fife, Scotland and Guernsey in the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. Plus many others. Note none of these is in a large city. Excellent houses though.

There is also a new Hanse Haus DVD. This is a educational journey, and although aimed at the customer (obviously) it is also useful for students finding out about sustainable development and housing, modular buildings, prefab building, and that sort of area.

The DVD goes through these stages:

fact-finding visit to their German offices and factory

tour state-of-the-art factory

see each home being constructed using advanced manufacturing technology

see the house being assembled

finally constructed on site in the UK

There is also a new image gallery of housing projects in the UK website.

They have also added a rolling news feature but this is a bit of overkill for a housing company – a blog is fine.

There are also customer stories about their builds. Very good stuff to learn about the process and get an inside view before you take the plunge.

Hans Hause buildings use passive heating (from people’s bodies, pets, lighting etc) and use very low amounts of grid energy to heat. Add a solar panel or two and you could be zero rated.

Have a look at Hans Hause new UK website >

And see our pages on DIY Building and Green building >

Also DIY recycled building materials >

Also have a look at Property development grants and finance >

Try Garden buildings and garden rooms and offices > as this is a related activity.

News here is that we adding a big new section on how to buy wholesale supplies and wholesale products for all aspects of building and construction. We think that DIY and small time and amateur builders should also benefit from cheap and low cost building supplies. Already suppliers like Wickes, B&Q and Homebase, Home Depot have a vast range at low prices but this is more about getting trade prices for materials and supplies if possible. We are also looking at green and eco building supplies and materials.

Building site materials construction - sand

There are many small and large builders merchants all over the country which are happy to do small sales, as it is all money comin gin. Architects and trade people often get a discount (10% or so) from these places, but if you are regular or friendly you too might get a discount. We will be starting an online building supplies directory so keep a look out for that.

We will be adding:

wholesalers

building supplies

green building materials

green technology

green roofing

green house materials

fabric wholesale for interior decoration and refurbishment and remodeling

wholesale furniture

online wholesale supplies

construction material

eco building

wholesale wood and timber

This new section will address building materials and construction, with a green eco slant, as is usual for this site. Buy cheap wood, bricks, slabs, windows, frames, glass, roofing… the list is almost endless. Garden supplies and garden materials will also be included, as you can get through a lot of wood, timber, bamboo, decking, slabs etc doing up a garden.

Save money and get more satisfaction from your building projects.

We are excited by this addition and will let you know what is coming in this building and DIY blog.

See our section on Building Materials and Wood for some information >

It has over 130 seminars on:

Future energy

Energy in buildings

Sustainable architecture
