Football (soccer) referees – replace with video ref technology

Posted by: Geoff Davis In: football|sport

[This was up a while back but has been reposted due to the Thierry Henry Incident – or Hand of Gaul – in the France vs. Northern Ireland World Cup qualifiers November 2009. How long have video cameras been on grounds? Football is absurd – to save the ref’s & the FA’s or UEFA’s vanity]

Moving slightly off topic, after a typical week of terrible referring decisions, mistakes, errors and general cock-ups I feel moved to write down some thoughts.

“If the referees want to stay on the pitch let them run around with big hats on to make them feel important – since that is their role. Perhaps with a flashing blue light. “

Referees are out of date as a method of delivering accurate decisions and ruin the game:

Adding extra referees around the back of the goals doesn’t help – example, Fulham vs AS Roma – foul in crowded penalty box – not even aggressive just tangled feet – the third ref got the naughty player wrong, then the main ref tried to red card (send off) the wrong player, possibly because he thought he was the ‘last man’ – but the one who did the fouling, Kelly, was not the last man, so should not have been sent off for an almost accidental tripping. And usually – almost always – a soft foul that gives away a penalty is not even yellow carded as the penalty is the (doh) penalty.

And in Liverpool vs Manchester United – the Carragher foul on Owen – last man – should be sent off. But no.

Liverpool Sunderland and beach balls – Chelsea Champions League semi … the list is endless.

Basic referring errors change the course of games and invite mockery.

Inaccurate decisions and inconsistent actions = malfunctioning anachronistic system.

What other multi billion pound business would publicly operate like this?

So why not replace the referees with video referees and other technology? All Premiership games have the cameras and technology.

If the referees want to stay on the pitch let them run around with big hats on to make them feel important – since that is their role. Perhaps with a flashing blue light.

The point of the referee is to provide unbiased accurate judgement. Since they are so poor, even at the highest level, this has to be changed, or the game become ludicrous – referees decide things as most games are close. More refs just means more stupid mistakes.

Or are refs kept to provide controversy?
