Building a new house, self-build sites UK

Posted by: Geoff Davis In: building|Buildings|Government Schemes|Grand Designs

New Government self-build scheme to help people building houses. This was announced by Grant Shapps the Housing Minister on 7 July 2012. Kevin McCloud is involved.

The idea is to release Government land so people can build houses on it. To build a home is admirable but a large project for a young first-time buyers, which this appears to be aimed at. Most self-builders have some experience and might already have a home and want a bigger place in a better location.

Click to open a Map for the locations for building houses:
Trevenson Park, Pool, Cornwall

This is the first for up to 60 new houses.

Followed by:

Kingswear and Torpoint, Bristol

Spencers Park, Hemel Hempstead

Pleasley Colliery, Bolsover

Upper Tuesley Milford, Surrey

Wilson Road, Hanford, Stoke-on-Trent

Chase Avenue, Walton Park, Milton Keynes

People living around these areas are already forming groups objecting to the disruption of the build process, and ensuing change to the landscape.

If anything like previous Government house building schemes, will potter along for a bit then disappear with hardly anyone noticing. Raising finance is the first difficulty.
