Building Materials navigation
Natural building materials are sustainable, environmentally friendly and tend to rely more on labour and skills then technology.
The most common currently is wood & timber but there are many other types of natural building materials that can fulfil the jobs of man made materials just as well.
The range of materials available to the green builder has never been as wide as it is today. Materials can be chosen to fit individual needs, for example rammed earth walls in an area that can benefit from its large thermal mass and sustainably forested timber in colder windier climates that can't.
Recycled and sustainable materials can be used throughout a build and these in turn reduce the carbon footprint of a build, with natural alternatives available in many situations.
Whether recycled, renewable or fresh made, materials should always meet building standards. As these vary from place to place it is essential to check local regulations before any final decision is made.
